Most people take cruises to get away from it all, have some fun in the sun, and take in some great entertainment and delectable foods while exploring exotic and tropical locations. For 528 people aboard the MS Westerdam, however, cruising took on a whole other purpose, as they aimed to win a million-dollar poker prize while sailing around the Caribbean. Over the past week, Party Poker, the world's largest online poker room, held its fifth annual PartyPoker.com Millions tournament, a $10,000 buy-in Limit Texas Hold 'em event.
With a whopping 99 players cashing at the tournament, a testament to Party Poker's generous payout structure, noticeably absent from the "money maker list" were many top poker pros, including last year's champion Michael Gracz. Other fan favorites, like Barry Greenstein, Joe Sebok, and Amir Vahedi also barely managed to get out of the gates, as the poker play, if not the sea, was tempestuous at best. The one top player who managed to separate himself from the rest of the bunch was Kenna James, of Southern California.
The only well-known poker personality remaining in the field during the last couple days of competition, James was understandably favored to win the event, and almost ran away with it until he encountered 22-year-old college student Mike Schneider. The two combatants blazed through the field until finally ending up head-to-head for the top prize, where Schneider took James to school, besting him for the $1 million winner's share of the prize pool. James took $700,000 for his second place finish.
