Helping to realize the poker-playing ambitions of hearing-impaired people nationwide, six deaf men have put together the National Deaf Poker Tour. The tour, which aims to have three major tournament events a year, hosted its inaugural event yesterday at the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Around 200 hard-of-hearing individuals ponied up $100 apiece to enter the No-Limit Texas Hold 'em tournament. A unique and important feature of the low-buy-in tournament was that, after the hosting casino recouped its costs, 100% of the prize monies were awarded to the players, with no extra or "hidden" fees.
With the main mode of communication among deaf people being sign language, the casino's staff had to think of innovative ways to communicate with the poker players. To that end, interpreters were hired, signs were drawn up and posted, and pens and paper were made available at each table to help facilitate the smooth flow of communication that is crucial to poker.
The group of six National Deaf Poker Tour founders also hopes to crown an official Deaf Poker Champion. The champion will be declared based on the results he or she posts in each of the three scheduled poker tournaments for the year. The next stop for the National Deaf Poker Tour will be Las Vegas, Nevada, sometime this summer.
