In yet another example of the corporate world turning to poker-themed promotional advertising, Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey has acquired the services of Canadian poker pro Gavin Smith. Smith will be the alcoholic beverage company's "poker face," acting as its spokesperson in the poker industry. As part of the endorsement deal, Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey will be holding a sweepstakes this summer, the winner of which will win a trip to Las Vegas to face off in a heads-up poker match against the Canadian poker pro.
As noted, this is not the corporate world's first foray into poker to try and promote products. Recently Diet Pepsi debuted a marketing campaign featuring another Canadian pro, Daniel Negreanu, as well as two other top poker players, Phil Hellmuth and Scotty Nguyen, squaring off against the company's poker-playing can of Diet Pepsi. Other large companies like ExxonMobil and Milwaukee's Best, have also utilized poker's popularity in their advertising, offering a free trip to this summer's World Series of Poker to lucky purchasers of their products.
