Along the backdrop of frigid Finland, homeland of defending Extreme Poker champ Juha Helppi, a total of six risk-taking poker players braced the icy temperatures to play in the second installment of InterPoker's Extreme Poker Challenge. The players, a lineup that included Helppi, Robert Varkonyi of the U.S., Peter Larsson of Sweden, Denmark's Ulrik Jensen of, Rene Christensen, another Dane, and Daniel Stein of England, started the game off wearing parkas to stave off the cold.
Players who busted out within the first half hour of competition, which lasted one-and-a-half hours in total, had the option of re-buying. There was just one catch- it would cost them their precious parkas, leaving them with only the t-shirts on their backs. Ultimately, four out of the six players were left in the -20C temperatures wearing nothing over their t-shirts. One of these players was the eventual Extreme Poker Champion, Robert Varkonyi, who four years ago won another momentous competition, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) final event.
Varkonyi lost his protective layer within the first three hands of the game after losing his chip stack to online qualifier Daniel Stein. To keep circulation up and the frostbite at bay after re-buying with his parka, Varkonyi ran around between hands. In the end, it was Varkonyi facing off against the defending champ, Helppi, who, incidentally, had managed to hang on to his parka. Varkonyi ultimately emerged the winner, busting the all-in Helppi with a full house.
