Online poker and casino operator Empire Online posted preliminary results today for the 2005 fiscal year, citing considerable growth, while at the same time recognizing the hostile environment currently surrounding online gaming in the U.S. legislature. This has been quite a momentous year for Empire Online. Taking all things into consideration, Empire looked towards the future, noting the possibility of future mergers and acquisitions. Such a strategy both demonstrates the increasingly liquid cash reserves enjoyed by the company and could also serve as a vital tool to protect the company's assets from possible legal threats in the area of gaming.
During 2005, the company saw a float on the London Stock Exchange, a heated legal battle with online poker giant Party Gaming and the consequent sale of Empire's once-flagship site, as well as the acquisition of online poker room Noble Poker and Club Dice Casino. Despite the seemingly instable course of events, Empire Online finished the year with a 57 percent rise in annual profits.
Empire Online's full-year results demonstrated that the Noble Poker acquisition was a lucrative one. There was a steady increase in new player sign-ups during the third and fourth quarters, and such growth has since blossomed, with the company citing, on average, 450 new "real money" players a day during the first few weeks of March, up from 138 a day during the fourth quarter of last year.
