Although in most regards, the poker craze continues to thrive, there are some who see poker on its way out, and dominoes on its way in. Could dominoes indeed be the new poker? ESPN, the network that was the first to broadcast poker programming, is planning to turn the game-playing universe on its head once again by broadcasting dominoes programs. The network is banking on the potential of those little white and black tiles for capturing the attention of the television-viewing public.
Dominoes, a game popular predominately among the Hispanic community, is already broadcast on ESPN Deportes, the network's Spanish language channel. The network hopes that the game's popularity will carry over to English-speaking viewers. Dominoes, however, will likely have a harder time becoming the next big thing, in comparison to poker. Poker benefited from that smoky back room allure and illicit, bad-boy image, both which helped up its appeal. Even when it did not benefit from the mainstream attention that it receives today, poker was nonetheless often featured in films and other media as a cool thing to do. Dominoes, in contrast, does not benefit from this.
