Minor UK player Alan Goodrum surprised the crowd at the Christchurch Casino, when he took first place in not one, but two tournaments at the New Zealand Poker Championships, one of which was the main event. Just days before, Goodrum finished first in the Peter Peko Memorial Tournament, one of the earlier events in the week-long New Zealand Poker Championships. For his main event win, Goodrum took home NZ$62,000 (~US$37.824) and in the Peter Peko Memorial Tournament, he won NZ$7,500 (~US$4,575).
The main event delivered a few surprises before it crowned Goodrum the winner. Lee Nelson and Gary Benson, two of Oceania's most esteemed poker players, busted out within the first few hours of the main event. Nelson recently made poker news headlines when earlier this year, he claimed the 2006 Crown Australian Poker Championship. The Kiwi poker player did not succeed in courting lady luck on his own turf, however, getting hit by some bad cards early on in the competition.
