Police officers in North Carolina's Cumberland County recently raided as many as 10 businesses and four homes in a video poker bust linked to a three-year-long investigation of allegedly illegal poker machine operation in the county. Along with the FBI and the state Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement agents, the Sheriff's Office deputies confiscated dozens of video poker machines and large sums of money apparently connected to the illegal operation.
Although opearting video poker machines in the state is legal, gaming operators must comply with highly strict regulations. The list of such regulations includes the prohibition to pay out cash prizes. Also, each venue must not operate more than three gaming machines. Finally, the prizes they give out must not be worth more than $10. According to sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Tanna, several of the the places raided broke all of the aforementioned rules.
Authorities were reported as saying that up to $5 million changed hands in the last few years, with some players collecting thousands of dollars in payouts. Sheriff Moose Butler and other law enforcement representatives have long complained that the state’s video poker laws are almost impossible to enforce. Hundreds of suspects in the case are likely to face multiple charges. County officials said they would continue their search for more illegal poker machines.
