A video poker player in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, has been convicted of third-degree murder in connection with a fatal assault of a bartender. According to the charges, a woman named Catherine Hamborsky shot and stabbed bartender Thomas P. Lesniak at a local bar before she burned the establishment to the ground. In addition to the murder charge, Hamborsky was found guilty of abuse of a corpse and arson.
Hamborsky had claimed self-defense, saying that she had shot and stabbed Lesniak after he attempted to assault her sexually. Prosecutors, however, presented another version of the story. The claimed that Hamborsky, who frequented the bar to play video poker, lost her temper after Lesniak refused her a tab. Ultimately, the jury sided with the prosecution. District Attorney Nancy Vernon denied Hamborsky bond and set sentencing for May 18.
