As reported by OPN in March, the much-anticipated Poker Dome is caught in legal/bureaucratic complications that could jeopardize its ability to host the planned high-stakes poker games for a forthcoming poker series on FOX Sports Network (FSN). Despite the fact that the complications are ongoing, construction on the Dome, built on the site of Las Vegas' Neonopolis entertainment complex, is still underway, in the hope that the show will ultimately resolve its issues.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board claims that the Poker Dome needs a gaming license, a requirement that would demand that the Dome include a 200-room hotel, a permanent bar facility, a restaurant and a complete casino, open 24-hours-a-day. Naturally, none of these additions are part of the plan for the Poker Dome, which producers say will host game show format competitions, and not traditional gambling, the likes of which would require a license.
The Gaming Control Board is currently consulting with the attorney general's office regarding the regulatory requirements of the Poker Dome. In the mean time, the first taping of the FSN poker series, which is scheduled for May 27, will take place at a temporary venue at the Tropicana casino. The show's promoters, however, were quoted as saying that the move to host the game in a temporary venue was the result of ordinary construction delays and not regulatory concerns.
