According to a 58-page study recently conducted by North Carolina gambling interests, legal video poker machines contribute over $100 million to the state's economy and create as much as 1,752 positions on an annual basis. Despite its evidently positive economic impact, many legislators have been trying over and over again to ban the operation of video poker across the state.
Poker machine foes, Senator Charlie Albertson among them, maintain that the gambling industry has a negative social impact. Albertson was reported as saying that video poker machines wrecked many homes and had made gamblers lose their assets and loved-ones.
Nevertheless, the state's much-disputed video poker industry has for years successfully thwarted banning efforts. There is only an estimated 10,000 legal machines operating in the state, a result of a six-year-old legislation that prohibited gambling operators to replace old equipment with a new one. However, despite all opposition, the industry has enjoyed the protection of powerful political figures, such as House Speaker Jim Black, and, therefore, continued to survive.
