It was recently reported that the North Carolina House of Representatives approved legislation under which the state's video poker machines would be banned in a year. According to this legislation, the only gaming venue that would be allowed to offer this kind of gaming entertainment is Harrah's Cherokee Casino.
Current NC law allows the operation of three video poker machines per business. The legislation calls for reducing that to two machines by October, 2006, and one machine by March, 2007. A complete ban is scheduled to take effect in July next year. Machine owners would then be obligated to sell their poker machines either to out-of-state businesses or to Harrah’s in Cherokee.
Nevertheless, before it is ultimately adopted, the ban must also be approved by the Senate. Since 2000, the Senate passed five bills prohibiting video poker in South Carolina, but, thus far, the state's gaming industry has successfully thwarted any and all banning attempts. Pressure for a ban increased this session after House Speaker Jim Black was linked to a federal investigation of the video poker industry’s political donations.
