Charles "Chuck" Taylor, the ex-commander of an American Legion post in Medford, Massachusetts, was recently accused of stealing as much as $23,000 from the facility's video poker machines for over seven months in 2005. Medford police Detective Tony Young was reported as saying that the 72-year-old Taylor, the only person who had keys to the gaming machines, admitted to taking the money.
Nevertheless, although Taylor confessed to actually performing the crime, he pleaded innocent to charges of first-degree aggravated theft and three counts of first-degree theft in Jackson County Circuit Court. According to Young, during investigation, Taylor told authorities that he intended to return the poker money if he had ultimately won.
Officials of the post said they they noticed an increase in cash flowing through the video poker machines in the middle of the month. Bill Maitland, the current post commander, reportedly said that most players who visit the facility are veterans, and spend their money at the beginning of the month when they collect Social Security checks, so the mid-month jump was extremely unusual. Taylor is slated to appear court in mid June.
