A resident of Northern Mariana Islands was recently sentenced to a 68-day prison term for stealing a poker player's wallet. On top of time in jail, superior Court Judge Kenneth Govendo also demanded that thief Cookson Ham pay a $250 fine and $125 in probation fees. The 22-year old defendant will also have to replace the money he stole from the victim.
According to a plea agreement that Ham signed with the Attorney General's Office, Ham took the victim's wallet with $235 after it had fallen from his pocket in a gaming facility. The authorities were reported as saying that the victim was playing poker at Wild Orchids Poker when his wallet fell to the floor. Ham picked the wallet up and walked away.
In February, police arrested Ham behind Garapan's discotheque for allegedly attacking another individual. During the arrest, police officers found in Ham's possession the stolen wallet containing the victim's identification cards. On a prior occasion, the poker-playing victim said that several days after the wallet was stolen, somebody contacted him and demanded $50 for its recovery.
