A woman from Melbourne, Australia recently pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and embezzling over $4.7 million through Bendigo Bank, a financial establishment where she was employed as a loans officer. The 38-year-old Kate Jamieson reportedly admitted to 13 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception and more than 20 counts of theft in the Victorian County Court.
On a previous occasion, Melbourne Magistrates' Court was informed that Jamieson, who is no longer employed, is a problem gambler who visited Melbourne's Crown Casino on a weekly-basis, investing large sums of money in the venue's poker machines. According to court records, her charges date from July, 2001 to May, 2004.
Some of the money the poker-playing embezzler stole was taken from private accounts, as well as from business and superannuation funds. Nevertheless, Bernie Balmer, Jamieson's defense lawyer, was reported as saying that the defendant returned over $1.2 million to the bank. Chief judge Michael Rozenes ordered Jamieson to reappear in court for pre-sentence discussion in the end of November.
