Prince Victor Emmanuel, the scion of Italy's Savoy royal family, was recently arrested as part of an investigation involving prostitution, illegal casino poker machines and suspicious contacts with Sicilian mob clans in Northern Italy. Investigators assigned to Victor Emmanuel's case alleged that the 69-year-old prince was the one who pulled all the strings in the illegal operation.
According to Italian newspaper reports, the prince is linked to grave charges, such as trafficking of video poker licenses, giving false testimony and promoting prostitution. Nevertheless, Donatello Cimadomo, Victor Emmanuel's defense attorney, was reported as saying that the prince had denied all of the aforementioned accusations.
Victor Emmanuel already boasts a rather notorious past. In 1976, the alleged illegal poker operator was tried for killing Dirk Hamer, a German teenager who slept on the deck of the prince's family yacht off Corsica. In 1997, Victor Emmanuel announced that fascism's anti-Semitic laws were not so awful. On a later occasion, however, he retracted this statement.
