It was recently reported that the Victorian Opposition in Australia requested that an independent investigation be held into the awarding of a poker gaming license to individuals associated with the convicted drug trafficker Tony Mokbel.
According to some Australian gaming industry insiders, Natalie Doumani was granted a long term gaming venue operation lisence in September 2005. Doumani reportedly approached Tony Mokbel's estranged wife, Carmel Mokbel, with a poker-machine related business proposition. In addition, Doumani's husband, Jack Doumani, is a good friend of Mokbel.
Ken Smith, an opposition gaming spokesman, said that he was beginning to question how thorough the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation members were at conducting eligibility probes to casino and poker room operator hopefuls. Smith also stated that police must be more involved in background checks of potential gaming venue operators.
Nevertheless, VCGR chief executive Peter Cohen was reported as saying that the commission members had never come across a suspicious poker-related financial transaction that has led them to believe that it might be involved in dirty money laundering operations.
