It was recently reported that the American Association for Artificial Intelligence is scheduled to hold the first computer poker competition during the 21st National Conference on Artificial Intelligence in mid-July. One of the competitors, GS2, is a poker robot developed by Thomas Sandholm, director of Carnegie Mellon's Electronic Marketplaces Lab, and graduate student Andrew Gilpin, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
According to Sandholm, computer poker programs require highly sophisticated technology. Sandholm reportedly explains that developing electronic poker programs is complex because poker requires players to make decisions based only on partial information In addition, the number of possible combinations of cards dealt, community cards and bets in two-player Texas Hold'Em games render it impossible for even the speediest computer programs to fully analyze every hand.
Although the GS1, the earlier version of GS2, is not yet equal to human poker pros skill-wise, it has already outperformed two industry-leading "pokerbots" in playing heads-up, limit Texas Hold'Em poker game in lab tests at Carnegie Mellon in the beginning of 2006.
