According to a recent study ordered by the Poker Players Alliance, a group supporting the regulation of online gambling, the U.S. government could potentially collect approximately $3.3 billion in taxes on a yearly basis by regulating the Internet poker industry. The study also revealed that a 1% user fee on all poker transactions is likely to produce another $800 million in revenue each year.
Although many casino industry insiders support online poker gambling, its legal status is highly unclear in America. The U.S. Justice Department officials were reported as saying that, a 1961 law forbidding interstate telephone betting, also applies to the Internet, rendering it illegal for the gambling industry to operate within U.S. borders all together. Nevertheless, the study found that the online poker sector is expected to grow by 15%-20% per year.
Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance, was quoted as saying "Our organization enthusiastically supports regulation and taxation,rather than an outright ban. We remain hopeful that opponents of Internet poker will come to the realization that prohibitions don't work and will embrace the idea of creating a regulated environment so that Americans can have an even higher level of comfort when playing poker online."
