Several of the poker world's most prominent players, including Joseph Hachem and Chris Ferguson, recently filed an antitrust lawsuit against WPT Enterprises, Inc., operator of the World Poker Tour, in federal district court in Los Angeles. Plaintiffs are represented by the law firm of Dewey Ballantine LLP, an international law firm with more than 550 attorneys across the globe.
The lawsuit seeks to annul releases that the poker players signed giving the WPT rights to use their names for publicity goals, and also seeks to void agreements between the WPT officials and Las Vegas gaming establishments that prohibit the casinos from hosting any non-WPT televised poker tournaments. In addition to Hachem and Feguson, the list of plaintiffs includes widely recognized names, such as Howard Lederer, Phil Gordon, Greg Raymer, Annie Duke and Andrew Bloch.
Chris Ferguson was quoted as saying, "WPTE has stacked the deck against all poker players who wish to compete in its tournaments. They are using our names and images to sell their products without our prior consent and without any compensation. We cannot let these wrongful actions stand. We will prosecute this lawsuit for as long as it takes to change WPTE's unlawful ways."
