The United State’s recent crackdown on internet gambling, plus over saturation of poker in the media has all but threatened the phenomenon known as the World Series of Poker. However, the show still remains a high rider in the ratings. Some of the more marginal programming has fallen off the cable box, top-tier poker properties such as the World Series attract thousands of would-be champs and remain in high demand with sponsors and broadcasters.
Indeed, the success of World Series of Poker speaks in, if nothing more, its astonishing numbers. There were 54,000 registrants for the 55 qualifying events in the World Series of Poker this year, up form 48,000 in 2006, with 6,358 making it to the main event. Much of the popularity of the show can be traced to the innovative "card cam" which gives the viewers at home a sneak peak at the players’ hidden "hole" cards.
Even off camera, poker is still alive and well in Nevada, where the American Gaming commission reported that some $160.8 million came from poker revenue alone, up from $140.2 million in 2005 and more than double the 2003 figure. That may be small compared to other games, but remember that poker is a game in which the casinos win every time. The casino will generally charge players for the length of time they take to play, plus a part of every pot.
The World Series of Poker first aired on ESPN in 1993 and will be a staple of the network all the way until 2010; even its ratings are not huge. Nevertheless, it is known as one of the most profitable shows on television.
