Poker Academy, one of the world’s biggest suppliers of online poker software, will supply the technological platform for the $50,000 Man vs. Machine Texas Hold’em Poker Championship, which will take place in Vancouver, Canada. The tournament will take place in conjunction with the annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) ), July 23 and 24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver, B.C. Polaris, the reigning world champion computer poker program, will challenge Phil "The Unabomber" Laak and Ali Eslami.
The $50,000 Man-Machine Texas Hold’em Poker Championship will pit a poker playing computer program developed at the University of Alberta against two of the best poker players in the world. The game will be played in a controlled scientific environment with real money to be won on the game. The competition will consist of four 500 hand duplicate matches. In each duplicate match, the same series of cards will be dealt in two parallel Man vs. Machine matches, with teammates playing the opposite hands in each game.
Co petitions that pit man against artificial intelligence have captured the public’s imagination before, ever since IBM’s "Deep Blue" chess program trounced Gary Kasparov, the world chess champion at the time. While Deep Blue could compute every possible move at any turn, technology has improved since then; Computers are now ready to face a far difficult challenge. Teaching a computer to play poker is far more difficult, since poker, in addition to skill and luck, has that "extra" ingredient. Intuition. Will Polaris’ parents teach their child that X factor?
