Fresh off his win against Polaris, the world’s deadliest poker program, fames poker player Phil Laak came under fire from a man named Tom Grant. Grant, a resident of Thailand, made the audacious claim that Laak actually took a hit out on him and his wife when they all lived in Thailand. Grant's accusation that Laak attempted murder appeared on his website, which is now down and will likely never be updated again. The site originally claimed that seven years ago while living in Thailand and playing professional backgammon, Laak got into trouble when he injured two children in a motorcycle accident. Grant claimed to have helped Laak out by paying off the injured children's families. Laak then allegedly returned the favor by paying Grant $5,000 and then partnered with him in an import/export business of religious artifacts to which Laak contributed $15,000.
Grant said that he told Laak the export of these religious artifacts would involve a $10,000 tax. He claimed that Laak was so disturbed by this news that he decided to pay $30,000 to a hitman to kill Grant and his wife.
And to add to the whole mess, someone claiming to be Grant appeared on the 2+2 Poker Forum saying that the business actually had nothing to do with religious artifacts but was actually all about smuggling heroin out of Thailand. And as Bill Rini points out in his blog, that would explain both the tax and why Laak would pay $30,000 to take out someone he owed far less to.
Grant started his website around the same time as the 2007 World Series of Poker and made several promises there and on popular poker forums that he would be revealing incriminating photos of Laak in his possession. What those photos might possibly depict is as big a mystery as any part of this tall tale.
Here is a link to a forum that include pictures of Grant and some evidence that suggests little more than the fact that Laak doesn't like the guy.
Ultimately, and contrary to what Grant claimed from the beginning, it came down to money. Laak eventually compensated Grant, and Grant hasn't been heard from since. His website was never updated as promised and the whole matter seems to have been swept under the rug.
