Tipping when playing Poker

26 August 2007

There is no doubt that poker has passed beyond the trend phase and is now a full fledged craze. With the explosion came hundreds, if not thousands, eager to try out what they learned in their online casino play. However, these players know nothing about tipping the dealer, some thing that could be very important for your game play.

Being a dealer at a poker game in a casino is not the highest paying job. In some casinos they are paid less than cocktail waitresses. Hence, these must depend on the generosity of patrons in order to fill in the blanks. Generally, a casino will allow the dealer to save up and keep his own tips, although they will record them for tax purposes.

A good rule of thumb is to tip with a winning pot, usually between one and five chips, depending on the size of the pot. However, other players may choose to tip the dealer only when he is changed, or at the end of their stay at the table. These kinds of players will usually announce their intentions at the beginning of the game. This is actually unfair to a dealer who gets to keep his own tips, because he may not be there when the player is leaving the table, or vice versa.

Tournaments present a some what different problem. Tipping cannot be done during the game because tournament chips have no value off the table. All players have paid an entry fee for the game and the casino specifies how much of that money goes to the prize fund and how much the poker rooms retain. Sadly, it is appalling how few tournament poker players actually do leave some thing for the dealer.

Tournaments present a different scenario. Tipping can't be done during play because all of the chips on the table are tournament chips with no value off the table. All players have paid an entry fee for the tournament and the casino specifies how much of the fee goes to the prize fund and how much the poker room retains. Tipping is not mandatory. It is a voluntary monetary expression to show that you appreciate the dealers' proficiency and fairness, and even personality, as dealers are expected to show courtesy, a sense of humor and good people skills.

Remember that most good poker players have good memories. Also remember that all dealers have even better memories.
