Rise of Major Tournaments Due to Online Poker

14 November 2008

Online Poker rooms where established in the late 1990s. Since then there has been a steady rise of players and revenue in the industry with an overall immense effect.

Online poker revenues are approximated to have increased 3000% in the four years up to 2005.

Television coverage is a significant factor for this increase. Televised tournaments such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) gave Poker global popularity.

In 2003 WSOP broadcaster ESPN expanded their coverage highlights show to include coverage of the entire tournament (including feature tables). The television revolution ''pocket-card cam'' enabled home viewers to now see what cards players had.

One of the most popular online poker tournaments is the satellite tournament, a mini tournament that gets you into bigger poker tournaments. In 2003 Chris Moneymaker , a satellite qualifier through Pokerstars.com and poker unknown went onto to claim the biggest prize of the World Series of Poker, the main event title. He beat a field of 839 players, the largest ever at the time and won US$2.5 million in prize money.

Moneymaker's win was enormous on pokers industry. Overnight every player began to realize that anyone could become a poker world champion.
The number of players and prize money has risen since for WSOP. 2004 saw a steep increase in players with 2,576 entries into the main event. It peeked in 2006 to an outstanding 8,773 entering the WSOP main event that year and a first prize of US$12 million.

In 2006 the US Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) effectively stopped many US players playing poker online by stopping financial transactions from financial institutions to online gambling/poker sites.
In 2007 the WSOP had only 6,358 entries- the first prize of US$8.25 million. Yet 2008 saw the 2nd largest prize money ever and number of entries with 6,844 players in the main event and winner Peter Eastgate taking home over $9 million.
