Two major cheating scandals over the last two years have been uncovered on Online Poker according to a joint report by ''60 Minutes'' and the Washington Post.
Players of Absolute poker uncovered the first scandal in August of 2007 when a ''novice'' player known as ''Grey Cat'' began consistently winning high-stakes games.
It was discovered that the too-lucky player was in fact a former employee of a Web site who had cracked Absolute Poker's Software code.
Although Absolute Poker administrators conceded this fact and instituted $1.16 million worth of refunds to players they refused to disclose the cheater's identity.
The scenario is that Absolute poker is headquartered in Costa Rica, and because online poker is illegal in the US, there is no course of legal action available to the complaints.
For this reason Absolute Poker was only fined $500,000 and allowed to keep their license by the Mohawk Indian owned Kahnawake Gaming Commission.
The second exposed scandal was by the players of UltimateBet.com in early 2008.
These investigations lead to UltimateBet.com's admission of cheating and refunding
Players $6.1 million. But as did Absolute Poker, UltimateBet.com refused to identify the cheater or cheaters.
The site's refusals to name the culprit lead the Kahnawake Gaming Commission to hire Frank Catania, a former New Jersey gaming official to investigate.
Cheaters took close to $20 million over the course of several years, according to Frank Catania's report findings this past September.
The Gaming Commission fined the site $1.15 million and found former Word Series Poker champion Russ Hamilton to be the primary culprit.
Yet despite these finding little can be done to address the problem besides these fines and censures.
